Why.

Today I went to the library to work on my evidence paper - and play online Scrabble. While I was there, I encountered two people who made me stop in my tracks (mentally) and think to myself, "why would you do that?"

Girl #1
I left my carrol to go blow my nose for the umpteenth time, and I ended up walking behind a girl on a cell phone. I assumed she was heading towards the stairwell, which is the place you go when you want to talk on your cellphone in the library, but then she did something totally unexpected - she took a sharp left and headed straight into the women's washroom, where she proceeded with her conversation. I have two problems with this:
  1. The washroom has a specific purpose, and by holding a cellphone conversation in there, you are messing with that purpose. Surely your friend doesn't want to hear bathroom sounds, and I can almost guarantee that other washroom users don't want to share their washroom business with whoever is on the other end of the line.
  2. The washroom door is not soundproof, so you talking on your cell in the washroom is effectively the same as you talking on your cellphone in the hall, except that if you are in the washroom you ensure that your chat partner gets only the crispest and clearest version of all other washroom sounds along with your scintillating conversation.
Girl #2
Girl #2 (briefly mistaken for a man because I was not wearing my glasses) took a seat in the middle of the library at a table, and proceeded to whisper loudly with her friend, make expansive arm gestures, and repeatedly pick her nose.
My problem? I thought her sweater was ugly.
